The brand's early model history is somewhat confusing but it's also the source of the cheapest Ssangyong used cars. The Musso 4x4 was launched in 1995, a tough and sleekly styled 4x4. It was joined in 1997 by the Korando, which has the appearance of a slightly malformed Jeep Wrangler, but in 1999, both models were transferred to Daewoo which had bought a controlling stake in Ssangyong. They continued to be marketed with Daewoo badges until 2002 but few were sold and pre-owned examples are very rare. SsangYong's second stint in the lime light began around 2002 with the Rexton - a family 4x4 with a strong Mercedes-Benz engine and an attractive sticker price. Used second hand examples of this car might be easier to come by but not much. Other ways to buy a used SsangYong include the Rodius, a full-sized MPV that was launched in 2004. It looked like a lot of car for the money then and it's an even cheaper used car if you can find one and see past the challenging styling. The Rexton II launched in 2006 and followed along the same lines as the original without setting the family 4x4 market alight. Soon after, we saw the Kyron compact 4x4 join the line-up. A second hand example of either might be a good bet for a large family on a tight budget. Ssangyong relaunched itself in the UK in 2008 with a new, more proactive importer and improved versions of the Kyron, Rodius and Rexton models to sell.
